Farm History

In 1984, Tom Sawyer (yes, that really is his name) purchased a summer home in Cashiers, NC and became interested in Christmas trees. He leased property and started planting thousands of trees. Tom opened his first retail tree lot near his primary residence in Ft. Lauderdale in 1987. Since his own trees were still too small, he purchased trees from other local growers. He also hired local ladies to create fresh wreaths & garlands for mail order.

In 1989, Tom purchased the 80 acre farm that is now the main location for his operation. Other than the (cir. 1903) house which is now used as part of the load depot, there were no houses, barns or Christmas trees on the property. Each year Tom plants new trees so that his customers can choose from many different sizes. The tree farm is operated as both a wholesale business and a “Choose & Cut” retail business.

Over the years, Tom built a barn for the wreath and garland making operation and another barn for storage. In 1998, he built a house in the middle of the trees. Tom and his family then said goodbye to Ft. Lauderdale and hello to the neighboring elves!

In 2009, Tom began helping the elves build the Elf Village. The Village has expanded each year to accommodate the ever-growing elf population in the area!  It’s a magical place!  Come see for your self!

The Sawyer Family Farmstead (established in 1993) is a popular event venue for special occasions, and hosts as many as 50 weddings a year.
